Some friends of mine here in Australia would like to hear some traditional Lancashire dialect. I used to have three recordings from the BBC radio programme Northern Lights but they have gone missing, if you have a link to any such recordings I would be grateful for a copy. Regards John

Hi Dorothy, I'm Anita. Bacup is not a place you visit from Bolton. I'm now at Blackburn.

What's your name?   I don't recall visiting Bacup when I lived in Lancs.   Looks like a nice place.   You live near Bolton.  Where?

Hi everyone,   Just wondering if any of you lived in Bolton, Lancs.     I arrived in the U.S. in 1950 and live in California.  My maiden name: Crompton.

It was a glorious day for the Royal Wedding on Sat. My son & daughter in law had a small house party, & trimmed up with bunting etc, & us lasses got dressed up hats & all. Kids had made us all flowers to pin on.After watching the wedding, we had a lovely afternoon tea.

Hi Valerie,
Welcome to our site. I am from the Rossendale Valley where Mike our host is from. After many moves; countries, provinces, states and cities I now live in Orlando Florida. Do plan on taking time out to read some of Mike's stories, they are hilarious.
Maureen.

Hi Valerie. I was born in Colne in 1932 and lived there until 1950, I still have family living in the area. My wife Lillian came from Blackburn and now we live in Queensland, Australia.

Welcome on board Valerie and thanks to RKT for pointing you in the right direction.  Our page is not as busy as it once was but up here for you to browse at your leisure. I met Terry when she was stationed with the U S Army back in 1988 and we were married in Lancaster Pennsylvania in 1991. We spent 5 years together in Germany shortly afterwards returning to PA where we live today. I still have my BACUP accent. We are almost neighbours seeing as you lived in Colne Lancs about 15miles from Bacup before moving out to Canada.  Anyway have fun for now.

Hi there!  I was sent here by Katie aka rKT, whose skills in regional dialect recognised a Lancashire lass.  I moved to New Brunswick in Canada almost 10 years ago but I was born and bred in Colne, Lancs.  Now I am living near Bridgewater in Nova Scotia, which I lovely but I do get whimsical and love reminiscing about home.  Its nice to see a website dedicated to this.

cheers and feel free to say 'ello' back.

You say you only have your cousin Joan left. I take it that Christine is still alive but maybe not living in the Valley any more. Christine was in the same class at St Joeys as I was during our school days. Then they had a younger brother John.  They lived at #3 Branch Street and we lived at #15. There was a little girl lived across from them and we would shout to her to "show us your bum" and she would in a heart beat hahahaha  Strange the things I  think of from the old days. A little bugger I was hahaha.

Mike, you are so right. When I first came to this side of the world I couldn't afford many phone calls back to England, it was so expensive. So I wrote a letter every week and even airmail cost quite a bit back then. Our first trip home took us 3 years to save.
I still get the Rossendale Free Press, on line of course. But Rossendale has changed so very much. I tried to find where my grandparents lived in Ramsbottom but thatwhole area was gutted more than 45 years ago. I have only my cousin Joan and very few friends left in the valley, any more. Hoever, I still have the great memories..

Yes Maureen and a hand written letter to my uncle in Ireland would take 3 days. Now it takes 3 seconds to type an email to him. Actually talking and seeing each other on a hand held phone (face time) was never even imagined. It's now when we say "it's a small world" that saying comes alive.  Hard to imagine today that before the advent of cars and planes that the furthest people could travel from the place of their birth, would be as far as a horse could travel. That is if you even had a horse available to ride. To people living in the valley a hundred years ago, many would have never seen the sea or ocean in their life time.

Hi Everyone, Yes, I had a great Easter.
I had the good fortune to have my grandchildren here in Orlando, this past week. I had forgotten how having a full house of people coming and going is very different from my every day life.
My mum used to say we were eating her out of house and home. That was how I was beginning to feel I was st the shops every other day - LOL. They wanted to know about my life in the valley and couldn't believe how very different my life was growing up than their lives are. They have traveled to many countries and I thought back to my world which was dependent on what buses  went where  and of course the trains..Which meant a small world. We thought going abroad was going to the Isle of Man!!! LOL.

During the long drought of e-mails, I re read your stories.. OMG! I was laughing so hard, remembering so many of the people you wrote about and remembering the times we lived, the people we both knew.. I thank you for those funny and happy memories. So many of the ones we knew are gone and we are no longer in Rossendale so all we have are the memories and I thank you, for bringing these back, so I can relive and laugh again!,
Maureen..
